Warmboard is the layer under your floor covering. Most floor coverings can go straight over it, including engineered and solid timber, floor tiles, vinyl and hybrid floors, carpet and cork.
Check that your chosen product is approved by its maker for use over floor heating, and lay it to the maker’s instructions.
Floor coverings
Engineered timber
Glued directly to Warmboard. In our experience, with timber glued down, the floor surface feels warm within 20 to 30 minutes of the heating starting. That’s the floor surface, not the whole room reaching temperature.
Solid timber
Nailed or glued over Warmboard following the timber supplier’s instructions for floor heating, including acclimatising the boards before laying.
Floor tiles
Tiles and stone go over Warmboard with a suitable underlay or membrane and adhesive. Your tiler should follow the adhesive maker’s instructions for heated floors.
Vinyl and hybrid
Check the product is rated for floor heating. Some floating floors need a specific underlay.
Carpet
Carpet and underlay add insulation over the heating. Choose a thin, dense underlay suitable for floor heating.
Cork
Cork can go over Warmboard when the cork maker approves it for floor heating.
